The Global Client Businesses serve institutional and retail clients in more than 100 countries, including corporate, public, union and industry pension plans; insurance companies; third-party mutual funds; endowments; foundations; charities; corporations; official institutions; banks and individuals worldwide. Blackrock Alternatives Specialists (BAS) helps BlackRock’s clients gain access to the investment teams, resources and strategies within our Alternatives strategies group, BlackRock Alternative Investors (BAI), and are tasked with delivering Alternatives-focused solutions that help to solve for our clients specific Alternative Investment requirements. Members of BAS have deep knowledge of Alternatives capabilities which help to drive specialist to specialist conversations. BAS works in partnership with the firm’s relationship managers within the Institutional Retail Client Businesses to drive engagement with clients in respect of our Alternatives capabilities. By ensuring that we have high caliber specialists, BAS can maximize our bandwidth and depth of client relationship.
Job Purpose/Background:
Reporting locally to [Director – BlackRock Alternatives Specialists APAC], this role will be responsible for supporting the development of Alternatives new business and ongoing client servicing across Institutional clients in the Korean market, and in doing so, support the continuing growth of assets under management of BAI in partnership with BlackRock’s Client Business team based locally in Seoul.
As at 31 December 2020, BlackRock managed US$294bn of Alternatives client assets (including ‘dry powder’), structured as commingled vehicles, multi-manager programs and customized separate accounts. BlackRock’s Alternatives platform includes Private Credit, Private Equity, Real Assets (Real Estate and Infrastructure), Hedge Funds and Alternative Solutions, with offerings across each of the Americas, EMEA and Asia Pacific regions as well as the breadth of the risk-return spectrum.
Through the support of distribution and ongoing client servicing for the Korean client base, the Alternatives specialist will develop a product knowledge across a variety of illiquid alternatives capabilities, in order to be conversant across BlackRock’s product set, as well as being able to deal with specific queries from local clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support due diligence and onboarding of new Alternatives investors locally, liaising with global investment teams in order to satisfy information requests.
- Provide ongoing local client servicing support in partnership with the local Client Business team, liaising with global investment Investor Relations teams to facilitate an efficient ongoing reporting process.
- Working closely with the local client facing BAS and Client Business representatives to drive new business pipeline, maintain sales campaign reporting and client follow ups.
- Work with Global Consultant Relations (GCR) and BAI Investment teams to coordinate and execute formal Request for Proposal (RFP) processes for local clients as applicable.
- Supporting the partnership with BlackRock’s Client Business teams, Alternatives Portfolio Managers and Product Strategists to design and implement a results orientated sales strategy for clients and prospects within the APAC market.
- Work with BAS and the local Client Business to develop educational and sales activity with those prospects not currently investing in Alternatives
- Over time, develop client responsibilities and attend client meetings with visiting investment professionals and/or BAS colleagues.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Prior experience within asset management or financial services industry and preferably with prior experience in Alternatives Investments
- A background managing client deliverables, supporting new business generation and internal promotion of Alternatives Asset Classes and their investment characteristics, as well as ongoing client servicing
- Capacity to move fluently between tasks, handling clients, relationship managers and portfolio managers in parallel to provide value added perspective and deliverables
- Ability to demonstrate clear awareness of key issues in the Alternatives markets affecting Institutional investors from both an investment, service and regulatory perspective
- Strong intellectual ability and interpersonal skills to establish his/her credibility with the senior leaders throughout the Firm and throughout the institutional investor community
- Partnership Orientated – Demonstrates a collaborative and cooperative approach to tasks
- A strong team player with experience of managing multiple internal stakeholders both regionally and globally
- Demonstrates a real passion for Alternatives asset classes
- Understand key drivers of success and a working knowledge of our competitors
- Ability to lead by example – high ethical standards and strong work ethic
- CFA or CAIA designation or working towards CFA Charter/CAIA Designation preferred
- Native Korean and fluent English oral and written language skills essential
